I read a letter from the praetor of the area for clan Ventrue, which had been left at the Tower. What is a praetor? This is something I am sure my character would know, given my lores, status, and general history.

The Praetor is the Head of the Gerousia for Clan Ventrue. The Gerousia is essentially the Board of Directors for the City's Ventrue. The Praetor is, then, the Chairman (though the actual alternate Title used is 'Manager'). Top dog of your clan, in other words. Often also the Prince or Primogen. You can find all of this explained in Pages 42-45 of Clanbook Ventrue. If you need access to this book, let me know.
